Depression Understood

Sadness and depression are separate, yet connected.

There is the notion of sadness and depression. They are separate, yet connected. Sadness is felt in the ache of watching a sad movie, the loss of a beloved friend and the experience of saying goodbye to something or someone that mattered. One mourns the loss, feels blue for a time, and eventually returns to a life well led.

Depression goes a step beyond sadness, expanding into your life and disrupting everything in its wake. It breaks your concentration, robs you of sleep, diminishes the appetite and decimates the ability to feel pleasure. Things that once came easily require effort. Things that were once enjoyed lose their appeal, and the simple act of living begins to feel hard.

And you don’t get to choose whether life brings you depression. It doesn’t select its victims by worthiness or good deeds. It hits indiscriminately, finding its way to you, without permission or an invitation, like a sinkhole that forms underneath a solid foundation, creating a hole that’s hard to climb out of.

The Weight of Depression

Depression Greets Everyone Differently.

Sometimes it hits all at once, like an anchor weighing you down, making everything difficult. You keep moving, trying to meet life’s demands, but every step is harder to take. Work still needs to be done. Dinner demands to be made and, people ask things of you. But meeting those obligations becomes ever more challenging. And so you wade through a life that hasn’t necessarily changed, while weighted down in a way that’s difficult to explain and even harder to carry.

Other times, depression rolls in like fog. Slowly at first, almost imperceptibly, until suddenly it envelops you. The future still exists, but the mist obscures your view. You know there is a horizon somewhere beyond it, but you can’t quite see where you’re going or find anything worth reaching for.

However it arrives, depression has a way of changing the rhythm of life. Time slows down. Minutes feel like hours and days drag on. Tomorrow becomes another obligation rather than something to look forward to. Rest offers relief but never quite restores you.

Why Get Help

The demands remain. The pleasure disappears.

On a good day, with a clear mind and impeccable health, life demands performance. Work, family life, mortgage payments, car loans and taxes all come due whether you are functioning or not. But for all that life demands, it gives something back. The pleasure of your favorite dessert. The warmth of the sun on your face. The stillness of watching a perfect sunset. These small moments have a way of making the weight of it all worthwhile.

Depression takes that trade and breaks it. The demands stay remain, but the pleasure disappears. It asks you to fight for the simple pleasures during one of the hardest seasons of your life. And what is the alternative? A life lived miserably, watching a slowly ticking clock. Left unchecked, depression will take more from you than you should ever have to give.

So fight for something better. For joy. For hope. For the excitement of looking forward to tomorrow. Have the courage to admit that something needs to change, and more still to accept help making that change. Because there is no reward at the end of this life for white-knuckling your existence.

And if there is to be a reward at the end of this life, let it be for having the courage to reach for something better when staying where you are would have been easier. Let it be for refusing to confuse endurance with living. For deciding that getting through your life is not the same thing as getting to live it.

I Can Help

With over two decades of experience as a Registered Clinical Counsellor, I have worked extensively with people experiencing depression. I use intentional, evidence-informed therapeutic approaches to understand what is happening, identify what is keeping you stuck and help you begin moving forward.

The immediate goal is to lessen the load. To make everyday life feel manageable again. To help restore the energy, interest and hope that depression has taken from you.

But feeling better today is only part of the work. Together, we can also identify the patterns, circumstances and warning signs that surround your depression and develop strategies for responding when they appear. The goal is not simply to climb out of the hole. It is to understand how you got there and build the skills to recognize the ground shifting beneath you again.

You Aren’t Alone

How I Help

Therapeutic Approaches

There is no singular approach to treating depression because there is no singular experience of it. I create a plan that is as individual as you are. I draw from several therapeutic approaches and adapt our work to your needs.

Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT)

Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) looks at the relationship between your thoughts, emotions and behaviours. Depression has a way of changing the story you tell yourself. A setback becomes evidence that nothing works. Exhaustion becomes failure. A difficult season begins to look like a permanent future. CBT helps us identify those patterns, examine the beliefs beneath them and develop ways of thinking and behaving that help you move forward rather than keep you stuck.

Dialectical Behaviour Therapy (DBT)

Dialectical Behaviour Therapy (DBT) focuses on building practical skills for navigating difficult emotions and situations. It can help with emotional regulation, distress tolerance, mindfulness and relationships — giving you strategies for getting through difficult moments without allowing those moments to define everything around them.

Solution-Focused Therapy

Solution-Focused Therapy turns some of our attention away from the problem and toward what is possible. Together we identify what is already working, what you want to be different and the practical steps that can begin moving you in that direction.

These approaches give us different tools for different moments. Sometimes we need to understand a thought. Sometimes we need to tolerate a difficult feeling. And sometimes we need to stop looking backward long enough to decide where we want to go next.

Depression Doesn't Always Look the Same

Depression Counselling in Walnut Grove or Online

I work with clients in person from my Walnut Grove office, virtually through secure video appointments, or by phone. My office is calm, private and comfortable — a place where you can step away from life’s demands and give your full attention to what you are experiencing.

Virtual and telephone appointments are also available for clients throughout British Columbia.

What to Expect

You can expect respect, consideration and confidentiality. You can expect me to listen carefully, ask questions and be straightforward about what I see. My approach is practical and methodical: we take the time to understand what is happening, establish what you want to change and create a plan for getting there.

Depression can make even small changes feel enormous, so we don’t need to solve your entire life at once. We begin where you are, identify what matters most and start moving.

Progress may begin quietly. Getting through a day with a little more energy. Enjoying something you haven’t enjoyed in a while. Making a plan and actually wanting to keep it. Looking toward tomorrow and finding something there worth anticipating.

Small changes matter because eventually they stop being small.

You don’t need to wait until depression becomes unbearable. Our first appointment gives me an opportunity to understand what you have been experiencing, how it is affecting your life and what you would like to change. Every person and every experience of depression is different. The length of counselling depends on what you are experiencing, how long it has been affecting you and what you want to accomplish.
