There Can Be No Greater Purpose Than Becoming the Best Version of Yourself
Counselling often begins with a crisis. Something hurts, a relationship breaks down, or life has become more difficult than it needs to be. But your counselling journey does not need to begin with a problem; it can start with the goal of creating possibility.
Perhaps you want to become more confident in unfamiliar situations, or maybe you want to communicate more confidently. Maybe you’d like to become more disciplined or handle pressure when it counts. Maybe you have a big goal in mind like writing a book, going back to school, changing careers, building a business or earning the next big promotion. Or perhaps the goal is a little less tangible, like being more than you are today.
Personal development is the conscious decision to examine the way you think, behave, respond and relate so that you can function better tomorrow than you do today.
Better Tomorrow Than You Are Today
Throughout our lives, we are often told who we are and where the limits are. We are instructed through action, experience and family of origin about the nature of our intellect, how strong we are and how capable of change we are. Over time, those judgements can become remarkably convincing. We begin to treat what we have been capable of doing in the past as evidence of everything we will be capable of doing in the future.
You get to decide what you are capable of. You can learn to be more confident in unfamiliar situations, more effective in communication, calmer and more persuasive in conflict, or a stronger decision-maker. You can develop discipline, flexibility, patience, courage and curiosity. You can become more open to new experiences, better at anticipating what is happening around you, quicker to recognize opportunities and more capable of adapting when circumstances change.
None of this needs to happen all at once. Possibility is built incrementally. You learn something, practise it and become a little better at it. Then you build on what you have learned. Each improvement expands your capabilities, and every new capability creates possibilities that may not have been available to you before.
Personal development is about deciding what’s possible and then making a plan to get there.

How I Help
My work begins with understanding where you are and where you want to go. Together, we can identify the patterns that are helping you, the ones that are getting in your way and the capabilities that would make the life you want easier to build.
Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT)
Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) can help us examine the thoughts and beliefs influencing the way you interpret yourself and the world around you. Some beliefs are useful. Others may have been formed years ago and quietly followed you into circumstances where they no longer belong. By examining them rather than simply accepting them, you can begin deciding which beliefs deserve to continue shaping your behaviour.
Dialectical Behaviour Therapy (DBT)
Dialectical Behaviour Therapy (DBT) can help develop greater emotional and behavioural flexibility. Its practical skills can support emotional regulation, distress tolerance, communication and the ability to remain effective when circumstances become difficult.
Solution-Focused Therapy
Solution-Focused Therapy can help turn insight toward movement. We can define what you want to be different, identify abilities and resources you already possess and begin taking practical steps toward the future you want.
Personal development is not about changing who you are. It is about being the best version of that person. It allows you to decide where you want to go and how to get there.
You may naturally be cautious, but you can learn to take risks. You may be introverted, but you can become a capable communicator. You may feel emotions intensely and still learn to regulate your response. These things can be mastered with intentional practice.
You don’t have to know the limits of what you are capable of before you begin. Part of the work is finding out.

Personal Development Counselling in Walnut Grove or Online
I work with clients in person from my office in Walnut Grove, virtually through secure video appointments, or by phone. Virtual and telephone appointments are available throughout British Columbia.
Personal development counselling can be useful at many different points in life. You may be preparing for a significant change, working toward a particular goal or simply interested in becoming more capable in an area of your life that matters to you.
You do not need to arrive with a perfectly defined objective. Sometimes the first part of the work is figuring out what you want to be different and what becoming better at it would actually look like.
What to Expect
Personal development begins with where you are now and where you would like to go. In our first session, we talk about what you want to accomplish, what you have already tried and what seems to be standing between you and the outcome you want.
Once we understand the destination, we can begin identifying the skills, behaviours and changes that might help you get there. We can try different approaches, pay attention to what works and adjust what doesn’t.
The process is incremental by design. Together we develop one capability at a time and build from there.
Frequently Asked Questions
Personal development counselling focuses on where you are now, where you would like to go and what you may need to develop along the way.
You may want to become more confident, disciplined, adaptable or decisive. You might want to communicate more effectively, handle conflict better, become more comfortable with uncertainty or improve the way you respond under pressure. You may also have an external goal—a career change, education, leadership opportunity, creative project or other ambition—and want to develop the capabilities required to pursue it.
Sometimes people know that they want something more from their lives long before they can articulate exactly what that means. Counselling can give you a place to explore what matters to you, what feels absent and which possibilities are worth pursuing.
The goal can become clearer as we work.
That means we can work toward what you want to accomplish while also examining what may be making it difficult to get there.
We can establish what you want from counselling, assess your progress as we work and adjust our approach as your needs change.
